Description: On the 28th of October, 2016, students of Class 10 visited ‘The Indian Museum’ accompanied by Mrs. S. Dhir, Mrs. I. Rakshit and Mrs. S.Ghosh.
We entered the museum to find the Anthroplogy Section to our left. It showcased the giant mammoth tusks, and the fossils of various extinct species of the prehistoric era.
Thereafter in groups we spread out to see the main attractions of the museum within the given time limit of one hour. A large group went towards the ‘Ancient Indian Monuments’ section which had sculptures and relics of Stupas from the Mauryan Empire. The Bharhut Stupa railings which were about 9 ft tall had exquisite carvings of Buddhist tales on its walls.
The others proceeded to the ‘Numismatics’ section. Coins dating back to ancient times held our attention. Each coin had various inscriptions and symbols on it.
Then we headed to the second floor to see the section on Egypt, the Zoology Section and the Textiles Zone. The staircases were beautiful with marble railings. What held our attention were busts of Greek Gods, a representation of the Ashokan Pillar had a statue of a young Queen Victoria.
We saw the Egyptian Mummy in a beautifully decorated sarcophagus, along with the busts of Great Egyptian Rulerslike NeFertiti and Tutankhamen. A model of the Sphinx left us speechless.
The Zoology Section was a marvel, as it had stuffed exhibits of once living animals of various species displayed in their natural habitats. This section led to the Aquatic Section exhibiting various aquatic creatures like the swordfish, stingray, cod, eel etc.
The textile section had beautiful garments and fabrics displayed that were in use during the medieval Indian Era. There were also various articles and ornaments on display that were used in those times.
This was the last section we saw before lining up for our departure at 12 noon. We had an interesting day, revisiting the past and hope to remember this experience.
